1. Warm Up
5-2-14
No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as writing a poem. Booker T. Washington (1856-1915)
*Tilling – making rows in soil to grow plants
*prosper—be successful
SAY
MEAN
MATTER

Say- This means that there is dignity in all work and everything we do deserves our  best effort.

Mean- That we should be proud of what we do because you putting your whole effort into it.

Matter- This is important because everybody do different things and everybody put their whole effort to do those things.

Write: Can people change their futures? Use evidence from the poem, article, or both to support your argument.

People could change their future if they want to. For example, the girl in the article "Taking the High Road" change her life after she drop out and had a baby. Ms Jones  or she said, "I don't have nobody, so for me to do it by myself and not have anybody telling me to do it, it shows I'm really trying. Ms Jones graduated from the Clemente course. This important because this shows how people change over time.
